Project Officer (Community Engagement)

The Project Officer (Community Engagement) is a junior-level role on our team who will spend 75% of their time fostering community participation and collaboration in public health initiatives and building trust with communities to improve public health outcomes. The holder of this position will spend 25% of their time working closely with diverse stakeholders, including community leaders, healthcare providers, and government agencies, to design and implement strategies for engaging and mobilizing communities to address public health challenges.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Project Officer (Community Engagement) will hold a bachelor’s degree in public health, community development, social work, or a related field and a relevant master’s degree, with at least 3 years of relevant experience in community engagement, grassroots organising, or public health promotion. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing and implementing strategies to educate, empower, and involve community members in public health initiatives. This position requires an individual with strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a passion for community empowerment. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English. Strong understanding of community dynamics, cultural competency, and social determinants of health is a plus. The candidate will possess good interpersonal skills, strong organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, will be comfortable showing flexibility and adaptability to handle diverse tasks and changing priorities, show attention to detail, and have the ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.

Some specific responsibilities will include:
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of community health needs, assets, and resources through surveys, focus groups, and interviews.
  • Identify priority health issues and community-driven solutions to inform program planning and resource allocation.
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to engage community members in public health activities, including health promotion campaigns, screenings, and educational workshops.
  • Facilitate community meetings, focus group discussions, and other events to gather feedback and input from community members.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, local authorities, and other stakeholders, ensuring their active involvement in project planning and implementation.
  • Advocate for health equity and social justice by raising awareness of systemic barriers to health and mobilising community action to address them.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design culturally responsive programmes and interventions that address the unique needs of diverse communities.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of community engagement activities, collecting feedback and data to inform program improvement and adaptation.
  • Develop culturally appropriate health education materials and resources for dissemination within the community.
  • Carry out any other task that may be assigned within their capacity toward the advancement of the organisation.
