Project Officer (Capacity Building)

The Project Officer (Capacity Building) is a junior-level role on our team who will spend 75% of their time designing, implementing, and evaluating capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of the programme team and stakeholders affiliated with a public health initiative. The holder of this position will spend 25% of their time collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to identify capacity-building needs, develop tailored training programmes, and provide ongoing support to enhance the effectiveness and impact of public health interventions in Bayelsa State Nigeria.

Roles and responsibilities

The Project Officer (Capacity Building) will hold a bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, adult education, or a related field and a relevant master’s degree, with at least 3 years of relevant experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating capacity-building initiatives in the public health sector or related field. This role requires a dynamic and innovative individual with expertise in adult education, training, and organisational development. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English and the ability to engage diverse audiences and foster an interactive learning environment. The candidate will possess good interpersonal skills, strong organisational, time-management, and prioritisation skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications. Experience working in multicultural and interdisciplinary teams, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is a plus. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, will be comfortable showing flexibility and adaptability to handle diverse tasks and changing priorities, show attention to detail, and have the ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.

Some specific responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and gap analyses to identify capacity-building needs and priorities within the public health workforce and partner organisations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to collect feedback, review performance indicators, and identify areas for improvement in public health practice and service delivery.
  • Design and develop evidence-based training curricula, modules, and materials to address identified capacity-building needs and objectives.
  • Facilitate interactive and engaging training sessions, workshops, and seminars for staffs and partners using a variety of instructional methods and technologies.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical assistance to participants to reinforce learning and skill development.
  • Develop monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness and impact of capacity-building initiatives on individual and organisational performance.
  • Compile and disseminate best practices, tools, and resources related to public health capacity building, training methodologies, and programme implementation.
  • Foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among stakeholders through communities of practice, workshops, and online platforms.
  • Carry out any other task that may be assigned within their capacity toward the advancement of the organisation.
